Prefixes, suffixes, and roots/bases
Prefixes are morphemes that attach to the front of a root/base word.
Suffixes are morphemes that attach to the end of a root/base word, or to other suffixes (see example below)
Roots/Base words are morphemes that form the base of a word, and usually carry its meaning.
Is alphabet a set? In formal language theory, an alphabet is a finite, non-empty set. The elements of the set are called symbols.
What is set of alphabets called? The standard system of symbols used by linguists to represent sounds in any language, independently of orthography, is called the International Phonetic Alphabet.
A SYLLABIC CONSONANTA syllabic consonant or vocalic consonant is a consonant that forms a syllable on its own, like the m, n and l in some pronunciations of the English words rhythm, button and bottle.Syllabic consonants in most languages are sonorants, such as nasals and liquids. Very few have syllabic obstruents, such as stops and fricatives in normal words, but English has syllabic fricatives in paralinguistic words like shh! and zzz.
